Hydrography is the branch of applied sciences which deals with the measurement and description of the physical features of oceans, seas, coastal areas, lakes and rivers, as well as with the prediction of their change over time, for the primary purpose of safety of navigation and in support of all other marine activities, including economic development, security and defence, scientific research, and environmental protection (IHO, 2020).
At the international level, the world’s oceanic surveying and charting is coordinated by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO). As one of the Member States, Indonesia is represented by the Indonesian Navy (TNI Angkatan Laut).
Our own Hydrography Research Group, formerly known as Marine and Electronic Survey Research Group, was founded by Prof. Dr. Ing. Sjamsir Mira in the 1980s. Within the past years, we have been carrying out researches on coastal management and national maritime boundaries. We have also been actively involved in teaching, not only at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), but also at Sekolah Tinggi Teknologi Angkatan Laut (STTAL), Pusat Pendidikan Hidrografi-Oseanografi (Pusdik Hidros), and Institut Teknologi Sumatera (ITERA).
